Top Level Design LLC

Est. 2012 · Sherwood, United States

Top Level Design LLC is an Oregon company founded in 2012 by Ray King and Peter Brual to participate in ICANN's New gTLD Program. Its stated mission was creating "passion-driven" domain extensions offering more expressive naming options than the traditional .com space. Few domain companies work both sides of the business; this one ran registries and sold registrations.

The registry portfolio was .design, .wiki, .ink, .gay, and .tattoo, extensions aimed at the communities that would use them. Alongside the registry business, the company built its own registrar, Porkbun, initially as a way to sell its own TLDs directly to customers.

In 2021 Top Level Design sold .design to GoDaddy Registry, followed by the remaining portfolio of .wiki, .ink, .gay, and .tattoo in 2023. Rather than expanding registry operations, the company pivoted entirely to Porkbun.

Porkbun now manages over 3 million domains across 300+ TLDs and ranks as the ninth-largest new TLD registrar globally. A retail arm built to support five in-house extensions became a registrar competing directly with the largest names in the industry on transparent pricing and customer-first policies.
