Why Passphrases Win
The XKCD 936 comic ('correct horse battery staple') made the math intuitive: four random words from a moderate dictionary beat clever-looking gibberish like 'Tr0ub4dor&3' both for strength and memorability. The Diceware method formalizes that intuition with a curated 7,776-word list and a precise entropy guarantee per word.
Use a passphrase for anything you have to type: master password for your password manager, full-disk encryption (FileVault, BitLocker, LUKS), YubiKey passphrase, SSH key passphrase. For anything stored inside a password manager and never typed, generate random characters instead — fewer keystrokes for the same entropy.
