When a domain's registration period ends, it doesn't immediately become available to others. Instead, it passes through a series of stages designed to give the original owner a chance to renew.
The domain may stop resolving. The original owner can renew at the normal price. Duration varies by registrar.
The domain is fully offline. Recovery is possible but costs significantly more (often $100-200+).
The domain cannot be recovered. After this period, it is released for general registration.
The domain enters the open market. Popular domains may be caught by backorder services within seconds.
