Hetzner Online GmbH is a German data center operator founded in 1997 by Martin Hetzner in Gunzenhausen, Bavaria. It runs hundreds of thousands of servers across its own data centers in Germany, Finland, and Singapore, with colocation facilities stretching from Europe to the United States, and ranks among Europe's largest hosting providers.

Pricing is where Hetzner diverges from the rest of the market. The server auction sells refurbished dedicated servers in a Dutch auction format: prices drop by the hour until someone claims the hardware. It moves older inventory while giving price-conscious customers a route to cheap enterprise gear if they act fast.

The rest of the catalogue covers the standard hosting spectrum: dedicated servers from around €42 monthly, cloud instances from €4.09, managed servers for hands-off customers, and web hosting packages from €2. The reputation rests on delivering performance at prices that often undercut competitors by significant margins.

Hetzner is also an ICANN-accredited registrar (IANA ID 828), handling .com, .net, and .org registrations, and acts as registrar for German .de domains through DENIC and Austrian .at domains through nic.at. Domain registration integrates with the hosting services.

Infrastructure ownership is the structural difference. Rather than leasing data center space, Hetzner owns and operates facilities in Nuremberg, Falkenstein, and Helsinki, with colocation extending to Ashburn, Virginia and Hillsboro, Oregon. The company also invested in the Cinia C-Lion1 submarine cable project, a 1,100-kilometer fiber optic connection linking Germany and Finland. Controlling the hardware, the data centers, and the network connections allows optimization that pure resellers cannot perform.
