The .zone domain was applied for by Outer Falls, LLC, a subsidiary of Donuts, and successfully passed ICANN’s evaluation process. A legal rights objection from AutoZone Parts, Inc. was filed but later withdrawn. The domain was delegated to the DNS root zone on January 14, 2014. On March 23, 2018, responsibility for .zone was transferred from Outer Falls, LLC to Identity Digital Inc. as part of a bulk transfer of 195 gTLDs managed by Donuts.
