Security Scanner

A security scanner checks whether a URL, domain, or IP address is flagged by major security vendors as hosting malware, phishing pages, or other threats. These vendors maintain databases of known-bad resources that are queried by web browsers, search engines, antivirus software, and firewalls to protect users.

Being flagged by even one major vendor can have severe consequences: Google Chrome displays full-page warnings, Google Search adds "This site may harm your computer" labels, antivirus software blocks access, and hosting providers may suspend your account. This tool checks 17 different vendors simultaneously so you can see exactly how your site is perceived by the security ecosystem.

Unlike VirusTotal which simply lists detection results, this scanner provides actionable remediation guidance for each flagged vendor — specific steps to clean your site and request delisting.

Security vendors use three main approaches to identify threats, and this scanner leverages all three:

Google Safe Browsing is the most impactful security vendor for website owners. It powers protection in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Android browsers — collectively covering over 90% of web traffic. When a site is flagged, users see a red warning screen before they can access the page.

Google crawls the web continuously, analyzing pages for malicious downloads, deceptive content, and social engineering attacks. Its classifications include:

• •MALWARE — Site distributes software that can harm the user's device
• •SOCIAL_ENGINEERING — Site tricks users into revealing personal information (phishing)
• •UNWANTED_SOFTWARE — Site distributes deceptive or unwanted programs

To resolve a Safe Browsing listing, clean the malicious content, then use Google Search Console to request a security review.

• •Compromised CMS — WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal sites with outdated plugins or themes are the most common source of malware. Attackers exploit known vulnerabilities to inject malicious code or upload backdoors.
• •Malicious JavaScript Injection — Attackers inject scripts that redirect visitors to phishing pages or trigger drive-by downloads. Often hidden in database content or theme files.
• •Compromised Server Credentials — Stolen FTP/SSH/hosting passwords allow attackers to upload malware directly. Use strong passwords, 2FA, and SSH keys instead of password authentication.
• •Supply Chain Attacks — Compromised third-party scripts (analytics, ads, CDN libraries) can serve malware to your visitors even if your own code is clean. Audit all external resources loaded by your pages.
• •Inherited IP Reputation — Shared hosting and cloud IPs may carry reputation from previous tenants. Use the IP Location tool to check your server IP's reputation.

1. Identify the infection vector. Check server access logs for suspicious POST requests, new or modified files, and unauthorized logins. Look for recently changed PHP files, obfuscated JavaScript, and unfamiliar cron jobs.
2. Remove all malicious content. Delete or restore compromised files. For CMS sites, remove suspicious plugins and themes, clear the database of injected content, and reinstall core files from a known-good source.
3. Patch the vulnerability. Update all software (CMS, plugins, themes, server OS). Change all passwords and API keys. Enable 2FA where possible. Review file permissions.
4. Request review from each vendor. Google Safe Browsing: use Search Console. Other vendors: use the vendor links provided in the scan results. Each vendor has its own review process and timeline.
5. Set up monitoring. Rescan your site periodically. Set up Google Search Console email alerts for security issues. Use the DNS Inspector to verify your DNS records haven't been tampered with.
